From Post-Earthquake Barracks to 30 Classrooms for €2.8 Million: The School in Chento Is a Symbol, but How Many Such Projects Really Exist?

The new “Krste Petkov Misirkov” primary school in the Chento neighborhood, Gazi Baba municipality, was handed over on October 16. It has 30 classrooms on two floors, 3,128 square meters of floor area, and about 2.8 million euros, or 170 million denars, was invested. At the opening were Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski, Education Minister Vesna Janevska and Gazi Baba Mayor Boban Stefkovski.
Mickoski said the same site previously had only barracks from the post-earthquake period, 50 or more years old, and children studied in poor conditions, while now they have near-European conditions. He said the Government is working on “over 1,200 projects” with municipalities, financed through decentralized transfers from the central budget. Janevska said the Government and municipalities agreed two years ago to make infrastructure a priority; according to Expres, for 90 projects worth 70 million euros over two years, the Ministry of Education and municipalities each pay half through a public call.
Still to be done are landscaping in spring, replacing the fence and a possible parking area for staff. The articles we checked do not report how many projects are completed, what they cost on average or what the funding source is for this particular school, so “1,200 projects” is for now a number given by the prime minister, not a verified total. That makes Chento a good example of what one finished project looks like, but not proof of the pace of all the rest.
