Heat Wave Forces Train Speed Limits, Power Outage Warnings in Skopje

Trains are running at a capped 50 km/h during peak heat hours as extreme temperatures continue to strain public infrastructure across the capital.

The heat wave that has gripped the country for days continues to affect the daily functioning of public infrastructure. The Regional Crisis Management Center in Skopje announced that a preventive speed restriction has been introduced on the rail network today because of the high temperatures.

Trains are running on their regular schedule, but between 11 AM and 5 PM their speed is capped at a maximum of 50 kilometers per hour — a measure introduced mainly because of the expansion of the metal rails under extreme heat, aimed at preventing potential deformation and damage to the rail infrastructure.

Not Just the Trains

The heat is affecting other parts of public transport and infrastructure too. Skopje's public transport operator JSP confirmed buses are running on their summer schedule, with several city routes rerouted because of ongoing construction work. At the same time, power utility EVN Macedonia warned of possible electricity outages in several Skopje neighborhoods, due to a combination of planned network interventions and increased system load under extreme temperatures.

Residents are advised to follow official updates from relevant institutions, particularly when planning travel during the afternoon hours when temperatures peak.
