The number of deaths linked to West Nile fever in Macedonia has risen to six, after another patient died, health authorities announced.
West Nile fever has remained an active concern in the country for several weeks, with dozens of cases recorded across multiple municipalities, particularly in the Skopje region. The disease is transmitted through bites from infected mosquitoes, with the elderly and those with weakened immune systems or chronic health conditions most at risk.
Continued Monitoring and Prevention
Health institutions continue monitoring the situation and identifying at-risk areas, particularly locations with stagnant water where mosquitoes breed. Dozens of high-risk zones were previously identified in the Skopje region alone, and authorities are again urging residents to remove sources of stagnant water around their homes and use mosquito protection, particularly in the evening hours.
Residents experiencing symptoms such as high fever, headache or muscle weakness, particularly the elderly, are advised to seek medical attention immediately.
