A Dorm for 1,150: The Waiting List Before and After the Ribbon
The reconstructed 'Stiv Naumov' student dorm in Skopje's Avtokomanda neighborhood is now open, offering modern conditions for 1,150 students — but the application process already shows demand far outstrips supply.
Prime Minister Christijan Mickoski officially opened the reconstructed "Stiv Naumov" student dormitory in Skopje's Avtokomanda neighborhood, calling it "the most modern student dorm in Macedonia." The investment provides modern living and studying conditions for 1,150 students, including finally functional washing machines on-site — a problem students previously solved by sending laundry home.
This year's competition for dormitory places across the country offered nearly 3,500 beds, and final lists of admitted students have already been published. Still, the number of applications continues to outstrip the available beds in larger cities, leaving a significant share of students on waiting lists or forced to seek private accommodation at higher prices.
While official ceremonies highlight investment in education as a government priority, the real picture for students who didn't get a spot remains unchanged after "Stiv Naumov's" opening — demand for quality, affordable student housing in Skopje still significantly outstrips supply, despite the new 1,150 beds.
