Swiss Glaciers Lose Over 5% of Their Ice After a Record Heatwave — What It Means for Europe's Rivers and Power

A combination of heatwaves and low winter snowfall caused Swiss glaciers to lose more than 5% of their volume in 2026, with direct consequences for river flow and hydropower production across Europe.

Swiss glaciers lost more than 5% of their ice volume during 2026, according to Swiss scientists, following a combination of intense summer heatwaves and unusually low winter snowfall that failed to replenish ice reserves. The year ranks among the worst in the past two years of recorded melting.

Alpine glaciers are a critical natural reservoir of fresh water, feeding major European rivers including the Rhine, Rhône and Po, especially during summer months when rainfall-driven flow is lower. Accelerated melting means increased flow in the short term, but over the long run, a diminished capacity of glaciers to regulate flow during dry summer periods, with direct consequences for hydropower production in downstream countries.

Scientists warn the melting trend has continued to accelerate in recent years, posing a challenge for water management, agriculture and the energy sector across central Europe, which have traditionally relied on predictable seasonal flow from Alpine glaciers. The question of adapting energy infrastructure to less predictable water resources is becoming an increasingly pressing topic in Europe's debate over climate resilience.
