Roaming Summer 2027: A TV Date or an EU Deadline

While a TV show was the first to mention summer 2027 as a possible date for scrapping roaming charges with the EU, January 1, 2027 was previously mentioned too — a gap that shows how far we actually are from a concrete, binding date.

The EU has begun negotiations with Western Balkan countries for their inclusion in the "roam like at home" zone, aimed at scrapping extra mobile charges when traveling within EU member states. A TV show was the first to mention a possible date — summer 2027 — for this change to take effect.

However, this isn't the first time a specific date has been mentioned — earlier, Minister Andonovski said free roaming with the EU could be possible as early as January 1, 2027, a date five to six months earlier than the one mentioned on TV. This half-year gap between the two announcements shows the process still isn't formalized into a binding timeframe, but is moving through a series of informal announcements.

For citizens, the practical consequence is that there's no clear, official date to rely on when planning travel or expenses — each new statement just shifts the window of expectations, without a clear distinction between political wish and a formally agreed deadline in the EU–Western Balkans negotiations.
