Big US Banks Report Results on October 13: 3% Growth Expected, but With the Largest Drop in Margins
JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup and Wells Fargo report on Tuesday, with Morgan Stanley and Bank of America on Wednesday; analysts expect earnings per share of $5.90 for JPMorgan.
The US third-quarter earnings season begins with the big banks: JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup and Wells Fargo report on October 13, and Morgan Stanley and Bank of America on October 14.
According to consensus, financial-sector earnings per share are expected to grow 3.0 percent year on year, after 1.3 percent in the second quarter. Net margins are expected at 19.7 percent versus 20.5 percent a year ago — the largest decline among sectors. The estimate for JPMorgan has been raised to $5.90 per share from $5.49.
Why it matters beyond Wall Street: banks are the first gauge of how interest rates and inflation are feeding into lending and spending. The Federal Reserve raised rates in September, and the figures will show whether higher rates are making banks richer or squeezing margins. These are pre-announcement estimates — actual results may differ.
