Brent Above $107: Reports of New Attacks on Ships in Hormuz and a Fire at Aramco — What It Means for European Markets

On October 14 Brent briefly topped $107 after unconfirmed reports of an attack on two ships in Hormuz; Saudi Arabia reported a “limited fire” at an Aramco building.

Oil prices rose in the morning of October 14 after, according to Reuters, Iran attacked two vessels in the Strait of Hormuz with new tactics, which has not been confirmed. Brent briefly topped $107 a barrel, and US WTI rose 0.5% to $94.64. A few days earlier, on October 8, Brent was around $104.8, and attacks on tankers in October have been more frequent than at any time since the war began in late February, according to DTN.

Saudi Arabia said an attack on an Aramco building in the east of the country caused a “limited fire,” and debris from intercepted Houthi missiles wounded four people in Riyadh. The escalation between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia is an additional risk to supply. US crude inventories are 14.5% lower than a year ago, according to data cited by DTN.

For Europe the effect is limited for now: stocks opened slightly higher, and TTF gas traded around €86 per megawatt-hour. For Macedonian drivers: the Energy Regulatory Commission sets prices based on reference world prices. The last decision we verified, in force from October 6, set maximum prices at 98.5 denars for petrol and 97 denars for diesel per liter. With Brent above $100 the risk of an increase is real, but there is no guarantee the next decision will bring higher prices.
