Almost 1,000 Women a Year Are Diagnosed With Breast Cancer: What the New Clinic in Shtip Offers and What 180 Extra Mammograms Mean

Minister Sašo Klekovski visited the multidisciplinary breast clinic at the Clinical Hospital in Shtip on October 14; 180 extra mammograms are planned for weekends this month, and a new mammography unit is coming soon.

A multidisciplinary breast clinic has opened at the Clinical Hospital in Shtip, with stronger coordination among specialists as its main goal, for a faster and better response for patients, especially from the eastern part of the country. Health Minister Sašo Klekovski visited the clinic on October 14 and inspected the new laboratory.

Klekovski said breast cancer is a serious health and social problem, with almost 1,000 women diagnosed each year in the country. The Ministry plans 180 additional mammograms in October, to be done on weekends to shorten waiting lists, and the Shtip hospital will soon get a new, modern mammography unit. “Healthcare is not made by buildings, it is made by people and their work,” the minister said.

October is breast cancer awareness month. The article we checked gives no figure for how much waiting would be shortened and no names of the clinic’s specialists, so the effect on speed of diagnosis has yet to be measured. From next week, the minister announced, new neurology services at the hospital will also be promoted.
