IMF Warns of an AI “Triple Whammy”: $300 Billion in Equity, $650 Billion in Debt and $1.4 Trillion in Promised Revenue — While Emerging Markets Are Least Prepared for Cyber Risks

The October 13 Global Financial Stability Report names an AI-related market correction, rising yields and cyber threats as the three key risks.

The International Monetary Fund on October 13, at the annual meetings in Bangkok, released the Global Financial Stability Report, which singles out three risks: an AI-related market correction, rising yields and cyber threats. The IMF’s Athanasios Vamvakidis said each risk alone is manageable, but together they could trigger unresolved vulnerabilities. In a severe stress scenario the banking sector as a whole stays resilient, but a tail of banks would be undercapitalized, especially those most exposed to nonbank financial institutions.

The report examined 14 public AI-related transactions: about $300 billion in equity, about $650 billion in debt and $1.4 trillion in promised future revenue. An IMF official described a “triple whammy”: if AI monetization is questioned, equities fall, debt becomes hard to service and promised revenue may not materialize. Vamvakidis, however, said valuations are not stretched because price-to-earnings ratios have fallen while earnings beat forecasts, and called AI “the single most important engine of resilience at this point.” Foreign exposure to US assets, especially in AI, is the highest ever.

On cyber risk, the IMF says global cybersecurity staffing may need to rise about 40%, and emerging markets are generally less prepared. It recommends better incident reporting, crisis coordination and third-party oversight. For small economies like ours, the point is that the risks arrive mainly through global markets and digital dependence, not through domestic banks: the report does not analyze Macedonia specifically.
