Brvenica Votes for Mayor: 16,256 Voters, Six Candidates and a Possible Runoff on November 1
The early mayoral election in Brvenica is held on October 18 from 7:00 to 19:00, after the death of the previous mayor.
Voters in the municipality of Brvenica on October 18 vote in an early mayoral election, organized after the death of the previous mayor on June 23. Polling stations are open from 7:00 to 19:00. The voter list has 16,256 citizens: 15,798 regular voters, 449 people temporarily working abroad and nine people in pretrial detention or serving sentences. Voting takes place at 24 polling stations in ten settlements, and 88 bedridden or frail voters who had registered voted at home on October 17.
Six people are running for mayor: Jovica Radeski (coalition led by SDSM), Jakup Useini, Arkin Jahiji (National Alliance for Integration), independent candidates Arife Idrizi and Dushan Bogdanovski, and the candidate of the “Your Macedonia” coalition, led by VMRO-DPMNE. The duties of mayor since the death of the predecessor have been performed by an acting mayor.
Under the rules, a candidate wins in the first round by winning a majority of the votes, provided turnout is at least one third of registered voters. If that condition is not met, the election procedure is repeated. If no candidate has a majority, a runoff between the top two is set for November 1. The State Election Commission (DIK) will publish preliminary electronic results progressively after polls close, the municipal election commission establishes results within 12 hours, and DIK establishes the final results.
DIK president Bojan Maricic said preparations are complete and that the problems with the biometric voter identification devices have been resolved: 24 working devices and spares are available. He added that DIK is continuing the procurement of software support for about 4,000 devices used at elections across the country. Results and turnout can be followed in DIK’s announcements after 19:00; until then this text contains no data on the outcome.
