State Institutions in Macedonia Owe Nearly €700 Million
903 institutions reported unpaid bills by end of June, with the debt growing by €26.4 million in just six months.
Macedonia's state institutions currently owe nearly 700 million euros, the latest official figures show. By the end of June this year, 903 institutions had reported unpaid bills, and in just the past six months the debt grew by an additional 26.4 million euros.
The figure covers obligations to suppliers, contractors and other business partners of the public sector — debts that, when left unpaid for months, directly affect the liquidity of private companies doing business with the state, particularly smaller suppliers with limited financial capacity to wait.
A Chronic, Not New, Problem
The growing debt of state institutions isn't a new issue — it's a recurring theme in the country's public finances for years, often linked to slow bureaucratic payment processing, budget pressures, and insufficient coordination between institutions and the finance ministry. Every new increase in the figure reopens the question of reforming the public sector's payment system.
Analysts warn that without structural changes to how public finances are managed, the debt will likely keep growing rather than shrinking.
