Orthodox Christians Mark the Dormition of the Theotokos

Orthodox Christians today mark the Dormition of the Theotokos, one of the twelve great feasts of the Christian calendar, symbolically commemorating the passing of the mother of Jesus Christ from earthly to eternal life.
According to tradition, after the Theotokos's dormition, the apostles laid her earthly remains in a tomb, but when the apostle Thomas later asked to pay his final respects and the tomb was opened, the body was not found — a sign believers interpret as the Theotokos's bodily assumption into heaven.
A Day of Pilgrimage to Monasteries
The holiday is traditionally marked with visits to monasteries and churches dedicated to the Theotokos, where believers come on pilgrimage, some even after several days of walking. Among the most visited such sites in the country is the "Dormition of the Theotokos" monastery in Berovo, where Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski today sent greetings to all believers marking the holiday.
In his message, Mickoski also pointed to the day's symbolic meaning as an occasion for unity, also congratulating miners, whose professional holiday coincides with this date.
