Constitutional Judges Restore Their Own Higher Pay — And the Same Ruling Raises Coefficients for the President and MPs Too
Parliament unanimously adopted the decision for October. Open question: is it appropriate for judges to rule on their own pay?
Parliament's Election and Appointments Committee unanimously adopted a decision restoring higher salary coefficients for the president, MPs and other officials elected and appointed by Parliament — following a Constitutional Court ruling that struck down the previously reduced coefficients applying to the constitutional judges themselves.
The coefficient for the Constitutional Court president's salary rises from 2.81 to 3.08, and for constitutional judges from 2.60 to 2.85. The new coefficients take effect with the October 2026 salary payment, bringing a monthly income increase of at least €200, according to initial estimates.
The Constitutional Court, in the reasoning behind its ruling, found that the salaries of its president and judges had previously been regulated under the same normative framework and criteria as other public officials — which, according to the Court, failed to account for its distinct constitutional status, since it does not fall within the organisation of judicial power but is a separate body protecting constitutionality and legality.
The decision reopens the question of whether it's appropriate for judges to rule on legal provisions that directly affect their own income. The Election and Appointments Committee, explaining the process, stressed it was simply implementing an already-binding Constitutional Court ruling — one that simultaneously restores higher coefficients for the state president, MPs and other Parliament-appointed officials, not just the judges themselves.
