Serbia's Vučić Resigns as President to Run for Prime Minister in Snap Election
The election is set for October 25; Vučić was constitutionally barred from seeking a third presidential term.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has resigned from the presidency — roughly eight months before his second term was due to end on May 31, 2027 — in order to run for prime minister in a snap election scheduled for October 25.
The move comes because the constitution bars him from seeking a third consecutive presidential term. The ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) had already nominated Vučić as its candidate for prime minister earlier in September 2026.
Vučić has held power in Serbia since 2017, first as prime minister and then as president. His shift to the premiership, rather than a full withdrawal from politics, is being read as an attempt to remain the country's central political figure despite the constitutional term limit.
