Prespa Gets New Pipes: 35 Kilometers of Sewage Lines and Six Treatment Plants From EU Funding
The 'EU for Prespa' program has completed 35 kilometers of sewage network across five municipalities, with six wastewater treatment plants expected to become operational by year's end.
The "EU for Prespa" program has completed roughly 35 kilometers of new sewage network across five municipalities — Pretor, Stenje, Krani, Dolno Dupeni and Brajchino. In the same municipalities, plus Slivnica, six wastewater treatment plants are currently under construction and expected to become operational by the end of 2026.
The project is funded by the European Union through the UN Development Programme, in partnership with national and local institutions, with more than 1,500 residents set to benefit directly from the new infrastructure. "Proper collection and treatment of wastewater means a cleaner environment, better lake protection and improved conditions for local communities' development," said Evout Sandker, sector head at the EU Delegation.
Beyond the sewage infrastructure, the public utility company "Proleter" received support including new waste-collection vehicles, household bins and IT equipment to modernize municipal services. The project represents a comprehensive approach to improving infrastructure, protecting the environment and supporting community development in the Prespa region — a concrete example of EU funding becoming visible infrastructure rather than just a press release.
