After 15,050 Runners: What a Sunday Without a Bus Actually Costs Part of Skopje

The Skopje marathon brought record participation from 63 countries, but the closure of major boulevards from 6 AM to 2 PM — with no published figures on the economic effect or the number of affected residents — leaves open the question of the event's real cost.

The Vizer Skopje Marathon drew a record 15,050 runners from 63 countries, with the oldest participant aged 79 — a figure the city rightly highlights as proof of the event's international standing. Yet behind the record lies a logistical operation with a real effect on the daily life of residents who aren't running.

The special traffic regime was in effect from 6 AM to 2 PM on Sunday, with portions of "Makedonija," "Dimitrie Chupovski," "Mitropolit Teodosij Gologanov," "11 Oktomvri," "Krushevska Republika" and "Treta makedonska brigada" boulevards closed, along with areas toward Aerodrom, the Military Hospital and "Jane Sandanski" boulevard. Traffic was redirected via alternative routes, but no concrete data on public transport, the number of affected passengers, or the economic effect on small businesses along the route were published.

The gap between the record being celebrated publicly and the absence of a clear accounting of the cost — in terms of affected residents, lost time, or compensation for businesses along the route — remains a typical example of how positive figures get more attention than the operational details that directly affect residents' daily lives.
