Nobel Week Begins in Stockholm: The Medicine Prize Goes First
Nobel Week 2026 kicks off with the Physiology or Medicine prize announcement on Monday, followed by physics, chemistry and literature mid-week, with the Peace Prize expected Friday, October 9.
Nobel Week 2026 officially began in Stockholm with the announcement of the Prize in Physiology or Medicine, the first in a series of six prestigious awards given out each autumn. The physics and chemistry prizes are expected in the following days, followed by the literature prize midweek.
The Peace Prize, traditionally awarded in Oslo rather than Stockholm, is scheduled for Friday, October 9 — an event that draws the greatest global attention each year because of the political weight of the choice. The prize in economic sciences, introduced later than Alfred Nobel's original categories, is usually announced the Monday after the economics-focused week, closing out this year's announcement cycle.
Every year, speculation and betting odds circulate ahead of the announcements over possible winners, but the official selection process remains strictly confidential until the announcement itself. For the scientific and literary community, Nobel Week remains the highest recognition in their fields, regardless of how predictable or unpredictable any individual committee decision turns out to be.
