An Election Dare With No Signature: What Mickoski Actually Offered SDSM, Levica and DUI

'We have a four-year mandate from citizens, but if SDSM, Levica and DUI jointly want early elections, we'll respond' — a conditional message that isn't a concrete invitation, but a defense against accusations of dodging elections.

Prime Minister Christijan Mickoski said the government has "a four-year mandate from citizens," but added a condition: "if SDSM, Levica and DUI jointly want early elections, we'll respond." The message came after SDSM leader Venko Filipche earlier said Mickoski shouldn't seek an "alibi" for elections, given that the ruling coalition holds a two-thirds majority in parliament and can call them on its own whenever it wants.

The key detail in Mickoski's statement is its conditionality — he isn't calling for elections outright, nor giving a signature or formal decision, but setting up a hypothetical scenario where he would "respond" only if the three opposition parties jointly requested it. This is a meaningful difference from a clear invitation, and reads more like a defense against the accusation that the government fears early elections after seeing its own polling.

Earlier, the same prime minister said "there will be no early elections this year" and that he'd like regular elections in 2028 — a position consistent with the current conditional message, but one that gives no concrete signal that elections will actually happen sooner. For the opposition, the ball stays on Macedonia's side of the court — the condition Mickoski set effectively demands a joint initiative that doesn't yet exist in that form.
