Diesel VAT Until October 12: What Happens If It Returns to 18 Percent
The reduced 10 percent VAT rate on diesel applies until October 12; if the government does not adopt a new decision, the rate returns to 18 percent, and an illustrative calculation shows a rise of about 7 denars per liter.
The government decided that the reduced 10 percent VAT rate on diesel, instead of the regular 18 percent, will apply until October 12. As a rationale, the government said the measure was introduced when oil and derivative prices rose on world markets and that the aim is to preserve price stability and living standards. The government says it will monitor developments and adopt additional decisions if needed.
If no new decision is adopted, the measure expires and VAT returns to 18 percent. An illustrative calculation: if diesel costs about 99 denars per liter with 10 percent VAT, the net price is about 90 denars, and with 18 percent VAT it would cost about 106 denars — a rise of about 7 denars per liter, assuming the pre-tax price stays the same. In mid-September Brent was trading around $107 per barrel.
For haulers, farmers and households, the most important question is whether the government will extend the measure, withdraw it or replace it with something else. Any extension, on the other hand, increases pressure on the budget, which is already preparing for a second rebalance. The deadline expires on October 12.
