Democrats With a 93% Chance to Win the House: What Is at Stake in the US Elections on November 3

Nate Silver’s model (October 8) gives Democrats a 93.1 percent chance in the House and 74.8 percent in the Senate; the estimate is a probability, not a result.

On November 3, the US votes for all 435 seats in the House of Representatives, 34 Senate seats and about 36 governors. According to Nate Silver’s model (Silver Bulletin), as of October 8 Democrats have a 93.1 percent chance of winning the House (an average of 238.7 seats) and a 74.8 percent chance in the Senate (an average of 52.2 seats), while the chance of winning both chambers is 74.5 percent. Republicans currently hold 53 Senate seats to 47.

Expert Mark Shanahan told Newsweek the Democratic lead reflects Trump’s standing more than Democratic strength, citing high living costs and the Middle East war. Republican-led states redrew House maps, and Republicans reportedly spent nearly $100 million on ads in newly created districts; Democrats redrew California. The net effect, according to the text, is still unclear.

The tightest races are in Texas (23rd district, Republicans +0.2) and Maine (2nd district, Republicans +0.3), and Kansas is a tossup for the Senate. The model is not a vote: it is a probability estimate and may change before November 3.
