Veles prosecutors investigate alleged “Cuban vaccines” against cancer: searches at several locations, families reportedly paid up to 3,200 euros

Prosecutors seek confiscation of the suspect's passport; the suspect is hospitalized. Guilt is for the court to decide, and for treatment doctors and registered institutions matter.

The Basic Public Prosecutor's Office in Veles announced on October 23 that it is investigating one person for fraud and quackery. The suspect, according to the prosecution, allegedly offered patients fake vaccines in order to obtain unlawful financial gain. The proceedings are under way, and the suspect is presumed innocent until a court decides otherwise.

According to the prosecution and as relayed by the media, search warrants were issued for several locations. Evidence was found at the suspect's workplace in Veles and will be subject to expert examination, and electronic devices were seized.

The prosecution asks the court for precautionary measures: confiscation of the suspect's travel document and an obligation to report to court regularly. According to plusinfo.mk, the suspect is currently hospitalized, so the decision on the measures was delivered at the medical facility. It is not known whether the court has ordered the requested measures.

What is known about the allegations? According to earlier media reports, families of cancer patients said they paid up to 3,200 euros for the therapy, and suspected that instead of a vaccine they received saline solution. Those claims are the families' own, are unproven and have not been confirmed by the prosecution in that way. The exact number of victims is not publicly known, and the prosecution is questioning injured parties and others who may have knowledge.

Why is this sensitive? When someone has cancer, hope for new treatment is great, and that is exactly what fraudsters exploit. The term “Cuban vaccine” may sound convincing because immunotherapies are indeed developed and studied in Cuba, but such a label alone does not mean a specific product has been tested, registered or approved for use here.

What can patients and families do? Cancer treatment should be managed through an oncologist and registered health institutions, and for any new therapy offered outside that system, they should at least ask the opinion of the doctor leading the treatment. If someone suspects they were defrauded, they can contact the prosecutor's office or the police.

What is not known? The suspect's name, how many people are affected, how much money is involved and what solution was given are not known, since expert examination will establish this. The outcome of the proceedings is also unknown.

What does it mean? The case is still at an early stage of investigation. Until a verdict, the safest way to read it is as a suspicion of a criminal offense, not as established guilt.
