Gerresheimer Plans a New Plant on 100,000 Square Metres With Up to 500 Employees, After Investing About €120 Million So Far
Mickoski announced from Germany a new investment and up to three more capacities in December. The exact amount and location have not been published, and the earlier €126 million announcement is older.
Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski said on November 3, during a visit to Germany, that the German company Gerresheimer is planning a new investment in Macedonia. According to the government statement, carried by several outlets and by the brief we use, the company’s investments so far are about €120 million and it employs about 300 people.
What is new. The new investment would cover an area of 100,000 square metres, with up to 500 new employees and a threefold increase in turnover. In December, as stated, up to three more capacities could be announced with over 1,000 well-paid jobs. The sources we checked contain neither an exact amount for the new investment nor its location.
Intention or contract. From the available reports it is not clear whether a contract has been signed or whether this is an intention. The word used is “plans”, so we treat the announcement as planned, not as already agreed. This is a question the reader should keep in mind when seeing job numbers.
The earlier announcement. Gerresheimer is not a new company in Macedonia. The page of the Directorate for Technological Industrial Development Zones (TIDZ) describes an investment of over €126 million, stated as the largest in the zone, with more than 180 new jobs and an average salary twice the state average. It says construction was planned to begin in the third quarter of 2022 and serial production in 2024. The date of the announcement is not given on the page, so we cannot say exactly when it was made.
What it makes. According to the same page, the company makes specialised medical glass products and vaccine syringes, as well as plastic products such as cannulas and vaccine vials. The first project in TIDZ 2 started with €25 million and, according to that source, grew to over €60 million. The company has about 36 production sites, about 10,000 employees and revenue of about €1.4 billion, according to the same source.
Figures to compare. From €126 million announced earlier and about €120 million invested so far it appears that the project is largely realised, but the difference of about six million (our calculation) does not necessarily mean something is missing, because the two figures may not measure the same thing. About 300 employees versus the announced more than 180 new jobs can be described as above the announcement, but here too we do not know whether the same categories are counted.
What it means for wages and exports. If up to 500 new jobs are realised, that would be significant for the Skopje region, especially if wages are as previously announced, twice the average. Production of medical packaging is export-oriented, so any expansion shows directly in exports. How much, we cannot say without turnover data.
What to follow. The publication of the amount and location, the signing of a contract and the December event at which three more capacities are to be announced. The history of past announcements is a yardstick: it is useful to compare how many earlier promises were delivered on time.
