Mickoski: Macedonia Still Has Region's Lowest Fuel Prices Despite Recent Hike

Despite the recent increase in diesel and gasoline prices, Macedonia still has the lowest fuel prices in the region compared to all neighboring countries, Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski claims.

As of August 25, Eurosuper BS-95 unleaded gasoline sits at a level that remains below prices recorded in Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece, Kosovo and Albania. The government uses this regional context as an argument whenever monthly price adjustments spark frustration among citizens and the opposition.

Relative Comfort, Not a Solution

For the average driver, the fact that fuel is cheaper than in neighboring countries offers little comfort when they still have to pay more at the pump every month. The regional comparison is accurate statistically, but it doesn't change the reality that prices in the country have been steadily rising in recent months, in tandem with global oil market movements.

The opposition has already pushed back on this narrative, pointing out that a regional comparison isn't the same argument as the promises of actual price reductions the government has made in the past.
