Skopje Marks 116th Anniversary of Mother Teresa's Birth
The commemoration at the Museum of Contemporary Art included remarks from Kosovo PM Albin Kurti, with cultural events continuing for ten days.
Skopje marked the 116th anniversary of Mother Teresa's birth this year, with a ceremony that began with flowers laid at the plaque marking where her birth home once stood, right in the heart of the city.
First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of European Affairs Bekim Sali laid the first flowers, leading the delegations in attendance. The central event marking the anniversary was held at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Skopje, where Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti also spoke as a guest.
A Message That Transcends Borders
In his address, Sali said Mother Teresa, born in Skopje under the name Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu, is today a symbol for all of humanity, her message transcending national, religious and social boundaries. Kurti, for his part, reminded the public that in 1979 she received the Nobel Peace Prize for her decades of work with the poor and sick.
The commemoration continues over the coming ten days with a series of cultural and humanitarian events across Skopje, including an exhibition of 29 photographs documenting her personal volunteer experience and testimonies from centers run by the Missionaries of Charity.
