Declassified Diplomatic Files That Prove Macedonian Identity Existed Long Before 1944
Column: Decades before WWII, British, Austrian and Russian diplomats were already reporting to their own capitals that Macedonians were a distinct people seeking their own state.
Every generation hears the same sentence, delivered with the tone of a final verdict: Macedonian identity was "invented" after 1944. The trouble with that sentence isn't that it's unpopular — it's that the diplomatic archives of four different European powers contradict it, decades before 1944 ever arrived.
I'm not talking about Macedonian sources, or propaganda from any camp. I'm talking about confidential reports that British, Austrian, Russian and Greek officials wrote for each other, not for the public — reports whose entire purpose was to describe reality on the ground, not to shape it.
London, 1940: "Neither Serbs, Bulgarians, Nor Greeks"
In Britain's National Archives at Kew (file FO 371/24880) sits a dispatch Sir George Rendel sent to the Foreign Office on August 25, 1940, straight from Sofia. British intelligence left no room for ambiguity: "The Macedonians do not feel themselves to be Serbs, Bulgarians, or Greeks, but seek their own separate Macedonian statehood." The same report noted that the vast majority of the population aspired to an independent Macedonian Republic.
The "Clissold Memorandum," 1930
A decade earlier, British analysts (files FO 371/14316 and FO 371/14317) reviewed the ground reality across Vardar and Aegean Macedonia. The verdict was unambiguous — the local Slavic population consistently resisted assimilation into Serbian or Greek identity, and official state labels like "South Serbs" were identified as an administrative fiction fueling instability.
The League of Nations, On the Ground, 1923
Colonel A. C. Corfe, head of the League of Nations Mixed Commission on Emigration, spent months in the field across Florina, Kastoria and Edessa (file FO 371/8566). His conclusion: when free of outside state propaganda, locals identified strictly as Macedonians, speaking their ancestral tongue — Makedonski.
Greece's Own Primer, 1925
Under League of Nations treaty obligations to protect minorities, the Greek government itself published the Abecedar schoolbook for Slavic children in northern Greece. It was written in neither standard Bulgarian nor Serbian orthography — but in the Latin alphabet, built directly on the local Bitola-Florina dialect, recognizing it as a distinct regional idiom.
Vienna and St. Petersburg, Even Earlier
Austro-Hungarian consuls August Kral and August Rappaport in Bitola (Vienna State Archives, HHStA, PA XXXVIII) briefed their court right after the Ilinden Uprising about the emergence of Krste Petkov Misirkov's On Macedonian Matters and the circle around him in St. Petersburg — confirmation that Macedonian intellectuals were actively building a standardized literary language and demanding national sovereignty. Imperial Russian consuls Alexander Rostkovsky and Ivan Yastrebov reported that, despite massive rival propaganda funded by the Bulgarian Exarchate, the Greek Patriarchate and Serbian boards, the local population retained a distinct regional culture and language of its own.
History Doesn't Live in Political Narratives
These aren't Macedonian claims about themselves — these are notes foreign officials wrote for their own governments, with no reason to flatter or exaggerate. The archives in London, Vienna and Moscow tell the same, consistent story decades before 1944: a people with its own language, its own consciousness, and its own demand for self-determination.
