Double-Headed Eagle Replaces Macedonian Flag at Mount Korab's Summit

At the spot on Mount Korab's peak where the Macedonian flag previously stood, hikers noticed a new metal structure bearing a double-headed eagle — a symbol associated with the Albanian flag. The photo surfaced on social media in recent days.
Korab is a shared peak on the Macedonia-Albania border, officially part of both countries. A metal pyramid has stood at the summit since 2019, funded by USAID and the Swedish Embassy in Tirana — with the peak's name inscribed only in Albanian, as "Korabi."
According to the posts, similar incidents of removing or replacing the Macedonian flag at this location have happened before. During the traditional climb by Macedonian mountaineering societies marking 8 September, the Macedonian flag was placed at the summit once again.
The incident comes amid broader sensitivities over symbols and markers in border and shared areas between the two countries — with no official reaction so far from relevant institutions on either side.
