25 Years Since the Ohrid Framework Agreement: Government Marks Anniversary, President Chooses Struga
A quarter century after the agreement that ended the 2001 conflict, a formal government session marked the day in Skopje — while President Siljanovska-Davkova chose to mark it separately, in Struga.
Today marks 25 years since the signing of the Ohrid Framework Agreement, the political settlement that ended Macedonia's 2001 armed conflict and reshaped the structure of the state. A formal ceremonial session was held in the Government's ceremonial hall in Skopje to mark the occasion.
Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Nikoloski, who chaired the session, said the agreement is a chapter of the country's history that shows people learned to live together, while also representing an obligation to leave future generations a fairer, more united and prosperous state. He said future generations should be able to grow up focused on education, success and their own future, rather than conflict and division. First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for European Affairs Bekim Sali also addressed the session, echoing that a quarter century is long enough to draw lessons and take a more objective look at the events of 2001, when the country faced one of the most difficult crises in its recent history.
Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski did not attend the government ceremony in person, instead marking the anniversary with a post on his Facebook profile.
A Separate Commemoration in Struga
President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova chose to mark the anniversary separately, in Struga — a city she described as an example of coexistence and respect for diversity.
A Quarter Century of Implementation
Officials noted that more than 130 laws and legal amendments have been adopted over the past 25 years to implement the agreement — around 59 of them concerning equitable representation of communities in public institutions, and roughly 40 covering identity, culture, education and decentralization of power. A dedicated Secretariat for the Implementation of the Ohrid Framework Agreement was originally formed to oversee the process; in 2019 it was transformed into a permanent government body, the Ministry of Political System and Relations Among Communities.
