A Bitola Higher Public Prosecutor Under Suspicion of Influencing Prosecutors and Judges: The Charge Versus the Headlines
The organized crime and corruption prosecution says there is reasonable suspicion that a higher public prosecutor from Bitola used his official position to influence colleagues and judges in at least four cases — but no names or evidence are public yet.
The Basic Public Prosecution Office for Organized Crime and Corruption has opened proceedings against a higher public prosecutor from the Higher Public Prosecution Office in Bitola, suspected of "receiving a reward for unlawful influence." According to the statement, there is reasonable suspicion that he used his official position and real influence to affect decisions of other prosecutors and judges, advocating lighter sentences or more favorable treatment for suspects and defendants in at least four cases. The prosecution says special investigative measures produced evidence supporting the suspicion.
Searches of the suspect's home and the premises of the Bitola prosecution office were carried out on October 6 under a court order. The prosecution proposed precautionary measures to the pre-trial judge: confiscation of his travel document and removal from his workplace. Media reported that his passport has been taken and that he has been removed from duty; the suspect's name has not been officially disclosed.
Commentary about the work of the Bitola prosecution has already surfaced in public. Former public prosecutor, now lawyer, Vojo Dimoski resurfaced his earlier posts questioning how the local office works, but said he is not commenting on this case. At this stage it is a matter of suspicion and procedure, not a verdict: the presumption of innocence applies, and the real test will be the documents and evidence still to be presented before a court.
