Volleyball Team Records First European Championship Win — 3-0 Over Israel in the Final Round
Gjorgjiev top-scored for Macedonia, who finished the Euros second-to-last in Group B.
North Macedonia's men's volleyball team closed out the European Championship with their first win, beating Israel 3-0 in sets (25-21, 25-23, 25-22) in the fifth and final round of Group B, played in Sofia.
Macedonia started strongly, with good serving and net play putting them 10-5 and then 14-9 up in the first set. Israel levelled at 19-19, but three straight points gave Macedonia the opening set 25-21. The same pattern repeated in the two sets that followed.
Captain Nikola Gjorgjiev was the team's top scorer, with Stojan Iliev also finishing in double figures. For Israel, Mayo Shay Lieberman scored the most points.
Macedonia finished the group stage second-to-last in Group B — ahead of Israel, behind Portugal, Bulgaria, Ukraine and Poland — after four straight losses in their earlier matches, including no sets won against favourites Poland, Ukraine and Bulgaria. It was the team's fourth appearance at a European Championship.
