Granulex poll: VMRO-DPMNE 23.7 percent, SDSM 6.9 percent, while 51.4 percent of respondents are undecided

Mickoski leads with 18.9 percent ahead of Filipče and Ahmeti with 3.6 percent each, but the poll's methodology has not been published.

The agency Granulex published a poll according to which VMRO-DPMNE has 23.7 percent support, ahead of SDSM with 6.9 percent, DUI with 5.8 percent, VLEN with 5.2 percent, Levica with 4.9 percent and ZNAM with 1.2 percent. All other parties together have 0.9 percent. The results were published by Republika on October 24.

On leader ratings, Hristijan Mickoski is at 18.9 percent, while Venko Filipče and Ali Ahmeti are at 3.6 percent each. A figure for Dimitar Apasiev is not given in the published numbers. Mickoski is thus about five times ahead of Filipče.

The most important thing in the poll is a figure that is often overlooked: 51.4 percent of respondents are undecided, would not vote or did not answer. That means party percentages are calculated on all respondents, not on those with a view. If one looks only at respondents with a view (the sum of all parties is 48.6 percent), VMRO-DPMNE would have about 49 percent and SDSM about 14 percent. That is our calculation on the published numbers, not data from the agency.

How credible is the poll? The published text does not state how many people were surveyed, when the poll was conducted and who commissioned it. Without that information the margin of error cannot be assessed, nor how reliable the differences are. This does not mean the poll is wrong, but it means it should be viewed carefully, especially because polls are often used in political propaganda by all sides.

Context: the poll comes after the first round of the Brvenica election on October 18. The runoff is on November 1 between Stojančo Radičevski, backed by the “Your Macedonia” coalition led by VMRO-DPMNE, and Arkin Jahiji of the National Alliance for Integration. The poll does not concern Brvenica but national support, so it cannot be used to forecast that election.

What is not known? It is not known whether the poll is representative, how large the sample is, or how the questions were framed. Nor is it known how the undecided would vote, who make up half of respondents. It is also unclear why no rating is given for Apasiev.

What does it mean? The poll shows VMRO-DPMNE ahead of SDSM, but a large part of the public is not making up its mind. Without a published methodology, the safest way to read it is as one data point among several, not a final picture.
