Mickoski: 95 Percent of Alta Banka Savers Have Deposits Up to 30,000 Euros and Are Guaranteed in Full
The prime minister said savers and creditors will be paid to the last denar and that the problem was imported from Serbia.
Skopje – Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski on November 5 addressed the savers of Alta Banka with a message he repeated several times: there is no reason for panic. “The Alta Banka case is a case in Serbia,” he said, adding that the problem was “imported” into Macedonia.
The key number in his address was 30,000 euros. “95 percent of savers have savings deposits up to 30,000 euros and they are guaranteed in the full amount,” Mickoski said. That means the guarantee covers the whole sum for those savers. Above that amount, according to the prime minister, it concerns a few percent of savers.
Mickoski said the money of savers and creditors will not be lost and that they will be paid to the last denar. By the editorial calculation, if 95 percent of savers are under the limit, about 5 percent remain, or every twentieth saver, whose deposits exceed the guaranteed amount.
Besides savers, the prime minister also spoke about the economy. According to him, the greatest concern is about Macedonian companies whose partners in Serbia are unable to operate because of frozen funds. “Businesses are closing and companies are collapsing,” Mickoski said, warning that the consequences could be felt in jobs in both countries.
The prime minister urged savers and creditors to stay calm. The message was also aimed at the opposition, which he said spreads hysteria about the bank.
What is already known from the National Bank: Alta Banka AD Bitola has been placed under temporary administration, the bank is assessed as highly capitalised and liquid and is not in bankruptcy, and its Belgrade parent lost its licence on October 30. Cash withdrawals are limited to 10,000 denars a week for individuals, that is 20,000 denars per two weeks for clients without cards.
What is not known: exactly how many savers and deposits the bank has in Bitola, what the timeframe is for a sale or change of ownership, and what the scenarios are if new concern appears among clients. The 5 percent figure has not been explained with an absolute amount.
The prime minister’s message is clear and in numbers: a deposit up to 30,000 euros is guaranteed in full.
