Veles: Safe City Is Live — About 150 Tickets in a Day and a Half, Mostly for Speeding
About 150 speeding tickets were issued in the first day and a half, alongside a new garage groundbreaking.
The Safe City traffic-surveillance system went live in Veles and the Vardar region from Saturday, 12 September, after technical checks and final testing were completed, the interior ministry said. The city also received a command centre for the system, housed in the former Ministry of Defence premises.
Interior Minister Panche Toshkovski said at the launch that 151 traffic violations were recorded in the first 36 hours in the Veles police area. "Yesterday (Saturday) 124 tickets were logged, and today by noon another 27, for a total of 151 in a day and a half," Toshkovski said, adding that the cameras exist "to save human lives, not to fill the budget."
Before the launch, Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski, Toshkovski and Veles mayor Marko Kolev laid the foundation stone for an underground multi-storey garage in the city centre. The structure, spanning three underground levels to a depth of 15 metres, is to provide 100 parking spaces. The investment is valued at 221 million denars, funded through the Hungarian loan.
The two events ran side by side but are separate: the cameras are already issuing tickets, while the garage is only at the start of construction, with completion expected later.
