Deputy Speaker of the Polish Sejm Hołownia in North Macedonia: Misajlovski discussed defence cooperation and EU integration

No signed agreements have been published, and the statement of support for the European path is conveyed by the Macedonian side only.

Defence Minister Vlado Misajlovski on October 26 met Szymon Hołownia, deputy speaker of the Polish Sejm, who led a parliamentary delegation on an official visit to North Macedonia. The announcement of the meeting dates from the evening hours of the same day.

Misajlovski called Poland a NATO ally and said the partnership is a “significant basis” for deepening defence cooperation and strengthening collective security. He added that they discussed Poland's support for the European integration of Western Balkan countries, which, as he said, is an important precondition for long-term stability, security and prosperity in the region and in Europe.

He also mentioned the shared commitment to Euro-Atlantic values and their contribution to stability and security among allies. These are the Macedonian minister's words and describe a general message, not a concrete agreed measure.

What has not been published? The reported text has no statement from Hołownia, so we see his position only through Misajlovski's account. There are also no signed agreements, documents or announced new visits. We therefore cannot claim that Poland has taken on a concrete commitment.

Who is Hołownia? He is deputy speaker of the Sejm, the lower house of the Polish parliament. That means the visit is parliamentary, not governmental, so it carries broader diplomatic meaning but does not automatically bring political decisions. The checked reports do not state which other Macedonian institutions he met.

What is the link with the European path? Poland is a member of the EU and NATO, so any public support for the Western Balkans carries political weight. Still, the key obstacle on the Macedonian path remains the dispute with Bulgaria and the demand for a constitutional amendment, which Poland cannot resolve alone. On October 23, Commissioner Marta Kos again said the constitutional amendment is an obligation.

What is not known? It is not known how long the visit lasts and what its full program is. It is also not known whether Poland plans concrete defence cooperation with North Macedonia, such as training, equipment or joint exercises. It is unclear whether an invitation for a return visit will follow.

What does it mean? The visit is a diplomatic signal that North Macedonia maintains support among EU and NATO members. The real value will be seen in whether the messages turn into concrete steps.
