BRT Ahead of Tender: Skopje Bus Rapid Transit Project in Final EBRD Approval Stage

Gjorgjievski: the tender is expected within days, construction in spring. The project is worth €70 million.

Skopje's Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project has entered its final approval phase with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and the tender for design and construction is expected to be published within days, Skopje mayor Orce Gjorgjievski said on a television programme.

According to him, the required documentation has been submitted and a response from the bank is expected, with the aim of wrapping up the process by the end of the week. Once finalised, the tender will follow, with construction expected to begin in spring.

"We are working in full coordination with the EBRD, and the tender procedure will follow European regulations," Gjorgjievski said. The €70 million project is financed through an EBRD loan to the City of Skopje, approved back in March this year.

The city says the system's rollout will preserve the existing central greenery along the boulevards, so the modernisation of public transport will proceed alongside environmental preservation. The BRT system envisages dedicated bus lanes, priority at intersections and high vehicle frequency, aimed at cutting travel time and reducing pollution — traffic being one of Skopje's main sources of it.
