Site Chosen for the National Data Centre: It Will Be Built Near Bunardzhik
Andonovski: the site is near the highway and fibre, with room for solar power. Construction will take up to 2.5 years.
Digital Transformation Minister Stefan Andonovski announced that the site for the National Data Centre has been chosen — a plot near Skopje's two technological-industrial development zones, close to Bunardzhik.
According to the minister, the location was picked for its proximity to Skopje, the highway and existing fibre-optic infrastructure. The land has no farming value and enough space for a possible photovoltaic plant that could eventually supply part of the centre's electricity needs.
Talks were previously held with the World Bank over financing, but Andonovski said it cannot fund the project due to a mismatch with EU requirements. The government is now negotiating with several potential financiers, including the Council of Europe Development Bank.
Construction, from the start of works to commissioning, is expected to take about two to two and a half years. The centre will be built as modular infrastructure allowing gradual expansion, with equipment procurement planned for 2027-2028.
Andonovski has previously stressed that data centres are a "clean industry," with close to $7 trillion in global investment expected over the next six to ten years, and that securing even a small share of that would be a significant step for the country.
