Alexandroupolis Plus a Serbia Interconnector: Macedonia Targets 12x Gas Capacity by 2028
The Greece pipeline is under construction, expected online in 2027. Financial details on the Serbia link remain unclear.
Macedonia, through connecting to the liquefied natural gas terminal in Alexandroupolis and building a northern interconnector to Serbia, is positioning itself as a transit route for gas supply toward Central Europe. Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski highlighted the projects as a major development opportunity for the country following his Washington visit.
Once both projects are completed, expected by the end of 2028, the country's available gas capacity would grow twelvefold compared to today. The 123-kilometre gas interconnector with Greece — 68 kilometres of it on Macedonian territory — is already under construction, with full operation expected in 2027, giving direct access to the LNG terminals at Revithoussa and Alexandroupolis.
The agreement for the Serbia interconnector was signed by NOMAGAS director Nedim Rama and contractor "Rapid Build," in the presence of Mickoski and Energy Minister Sanja Bozhinovska. "With the interconnector to Serbia we are opening Macedonia to new gas sources and strengthening our position as a regional energy corridor," Bozhinovska said.
The project is part of Macedonia joining the Vertical Gas Corridor — a European initiative to diversify supply. From a dead-end of the gas network, the goal is for Macedonia to become an active transit point between the southern and northern routes. Exact financial details for the Serbia interconnector — total value, funding source, firm deadline — have not yet been fully disclosed.
