Student List with 52.65 percent and about 140 seats in Serbia, Mickoski congratulates Srdanović
With 140 of 250 seats the list can form a government alone, but a prime ministerial candidate has not yet been named.
According to the near-final results of the Republic Electoral Commission (RIK), relayed by Balkan Insight on October 26, the Student List won 52.65 percent of the vote, and “United Serbia”, that is Aleksandar Vučić's Serbian Progressive Party, 39.2 percent. 8,135 of 8,392 polling stations had been counted, about 96.9 percent. Turnout, according to the RIK, was 68.8 percent.
Monitors from CeSID and Ipsos, with 96 percent of the sample counted, put the Student List at 52.9 percent and “United Serbia” at 38.8 percent, which differs slightly from the RIK figures. According to the seat projection, the Student List gets 140 and “United Serbia” 103 of 250 seats. The remaining seats go to minority lists: the Alliance of Vojvodina Hungarians 3, the Albanian coalition 2, Rasim Ljajić's list 1 and SDA Sandžak 1.
A government requires 126 seats, so with 140 the Student List can form a government without a coalition. Still, the list has not yet named a candidate for prime minister. First on the list is Ilija Srdanović, a professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Novi Sad. From the checked reports it is not clear who will lead the presidency after Vučić's resignation in September.
Mickoski congratulated Srdanović by phone. In a social media post he said that “good interstate relations, mutual respect and cooperation will continue to develop” and expressed hope that this will serve the citizens of both countries. That is the official message from Skopje.
How does this fit with earlier news? On October 25 Vučić conceded defeat, and the EU, through António Costa and Ursula von der Leyen, offered support for reforms. We described those reactions in separate texts. This text gives the official figures and the Macedonian reaction.
What can we assume for North Macedonia? For now, only what has been stated: Skopje says relations will continue. We do not state what changes might follow, since the Student List's foreign policy program is not described in detail in the sources we checked.
What is not known? The final result is not known, nor who will be prime minister and when the government will be formed. It is also not known whether the results will be challenged. It is unclear what the SNS will do as an opposition.
What does it mean? With a clear majority the Student List has room to form a government without bargaining with other lists. The first moves, especially the prime minister's name, will show in which direction the new government is heading.
