Macedonians in Germany Wrote to the Bundestag and the EU Against Dropping the Macedonian Language

Macedonian associations in Germany sent protest letters to the Bundestag, the German foreign ministry and EU institutions. They object to what they call the dropping or erasure of the Macedonian language in a European and bilateral setting.

The theme is not new. In the accession talks, language and history are the knot with Bulgaria. Skopje's government and opposition have argued it for years. What is new is that the letter comes from a community inside an EU member state, not from a party office at home.

The full text and the full list of signatories are not in every report that carried the story. Without those two documents, do not claim how many people signed or what wording went to Berlin.

What they ask, and what is not a reply

The ask is that the language stay recognised as Macedonian in European acts and not be replaced by descriptive formulas. Whether the letter was received and whether anyone in the Bundestag answered was not public this morning.

What remains open

The diaspora often writes; Brussels rarely answers at the same speed. The value of the story is the address: a German parliament and the EU, not only a hall in Skopje. Next is receipt and a possible reply. Until then it is a letter, not a decision.
