Mickoski: 'Gross Manipulation' by Prosecutor in Markovski Passport Case — Investigation to Follow

Prime Minister Mickoski reacted sharply to the return of the passport of accused businessman Borche Markovski, alleging gross manipulation by a local prosecutor in the Bitola Higher Public Prosecution and announcing that an investigation will follow.

Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski reacted sharply to the return of the passport of accused businessman Borche Markovski during a visit to the Clinical Hospital in Bitola, alleging gross manipulation by a local prosecutor at the Bitola Higher Public Prosecution, whom he called a participant in the process.

Two Conflicting Reports

The key fact the Prime Minister pointed to is the existence of two contradictory documents. The competent prosecutor from the Basic Public Prosecution in Struga had on 15 June 2026 issued a negative opinion on the defence's request to have the passport returned. After the defence filed a new request, the case was referred to the Bitola Higher Public Prosecution, which issued a positive opinion — arguing that the bail conditions ruled out any flight risk. The court in Struga subsequently returned the passport to Markovski.

"I believe there has been gross manipulation by a local prosecutor at the Higher Public Prosecution who is a participant in this process. An investigation will follow, because from the competent Basic Public Prosecution we have a different report from the one attached as minutes by the Higher Public Prosecution here in Bitola. This will not end this way. I personally guarantee I will follow this case." — Hristijan Mickoski, Prime Minister of North Macedonia

Who Is Borche Markovski?

Borche Markovski is a businessman facing charges of abuse of office. When asked whether the prosecutor in question was Pece Viziroski, who heads the Bitola Higher Public Prosecution, Mickoski said he would not speculate with names. The case drew attention when the Basic Court in Struga returned Markovski's temporarily confiscated travel document, acting on the Higher Prosecution's positive recommendation that contradicted the position of the lower-level prosecution.
