FUEN Unanimously Adopts Resolution on the Rights of Macedonians in Albania
Demands to Tirana: ratify the European Charter on minority languages and rename Pustec to Prespa.
The Federal Union of European Nationalities (FUEN), at its 70th congress in Helsinki, unanimously adopted a resolution submitted by the Macedonian Society "Ilinden"-Tirana, calling for greater protection of the rights of Macedonians in Albania.
Society president Nikola Gjurgjaj called the adoption a "historic day" for Macedonians in Albania. The resolution contains several concrete demands addressed to Albanian authorities, including that Albania sign and ratify the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages, and that the Pustec municipality be renamed Prespa.
"With great pride we present the Macedonian national minority at the European level," Gjurgjaj said. The resolution, he said, will shortly be formally submitted to all relevant Albanian state bodies, as well as to key international and European institutions for the protection of human and minority rights.
The Macedonian Society "Ilinden"-Tirana has been a full FUEN member since 2015. Whether and how quickly Albanian authorities will respond to the specific demands — including the municipality renaming — is not yet known.
