New Fuel Prices From 22 September — VMRO-DPMNE: Proof the Measures Are Holding
Diesel 104.5, petrol 99 denars. The VAT cut applies only to diesel — petrol is rising in parallel.
New retail fuel prices, in effect from 22 September, stand at 99 denars per litre for BS-95 petrol and 104.5 denars per litre for diesel — a decision by the Energy Regulatory Commission averaging a 2.86 percent increase from the previous decision. Ruling party VMRO-DPMNE, in a statement, cites the new prices as proof that "measures to cut VAT and excise duties are delivering results" and that Macedonia remains the region's lowest-priced country for fuel.
On electricity, Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski previously said the government is "developing a methodology" aimed at keeping the price unchanged, and possibly lowering it, despite what he called "the biggest energy crisis humanity has known," linked to the situation in the Persian Gulf. According to him, households have not seen an electricity price increase under this government, and the coming winter is expected to be stable.
Worth distinguishing: the VAT cut applies only to diesel, not petrol — whose price is actually rising in parallel. Macedonia does have lower prices than parts of the neighbourhood, but that is not a new development, rather an existing situation tied to lower excise rates.
