Nearly 90 Libraries Applied to "Matica Makedonska" Book Drive — School in Negotino Wins 35 New Titles

Macedonian publishing house Matica Makedonska has closed its public call "Where Are Macedonia's Books Missing?" after receiving applications from nearly 90 libraries nationwide. The initiative was part of a wider program marking both the anniversary of Ilinden and the publisher's own 35th anniversary, timed alongside 35 years of Macedonian independence.

After reviewing every submission, the publisher decided to award its 35-book donation to the school library of "Sv. Kiril i Metodij" secondary school in Negotino.

A Sign of Wider Need

According to Matica Makedonska, the scale of the response confirmed something librarians already knew: printed books still hold their place with readers, but many collections across the country urgently need refreshing.

The winning library serves roughly 500 students aged 15 to 19, along with the school's teaching staff. The application noted that part of the existing collection is outdated, with a significant number of books worn down from years of use. Despite ongoing efforts to purchase new required-reading titles, the library still lacks newer literature capable of drawing in younger readers.

What the Library Asked For

Among the priorities identified: Macedonian literature aimed at young readers, books on Macedonian history, language and folklore that are visually and thematically suited to teenagers, and fresh editions of assigned school reading.

Matica Makedonska thanked every library that applied, noting that the nearly 90 submissions were not just a number but a reflection of the daily work librarians, teachers and others put into keeping books within reach of readers. At the same time, officials said the volume of interest pointed to a need well beyond what a single donation could cover.

The 35 selected titles are expected to arrive at the Negotino school library in the coming period, offering a new generation of students fresh entry points into Macedonian literature, language, culture and history.
