58 West Nile Cases, Eight Dead — All Fatalities Were Older Men
Health minister Sasho Klekovski says the epidemic is easing, with only 4 new cases in the last two weeks.
The Infectious Diseases Clinic has recorded 58 confirmed West Nile virus cases this season, with eight deaths — all of them older men with multiple chronic conditions.
Clinic director Fadil Cana says patients with the neuroinvasive form need ongoing follow-up after hospital treatment ends, since neurological symptoms can persist for months and may require referral to a neurologist.
Epidemic Easing, Officials Say
Health Minister Sasho Klekovski says neurology clinics and physical therapy units were alerted two to three weeks ago to prepare for patients needing rehabilitation. The outbreak appears to be easing: only four new cases were reported in the last two weeks, and six patients remain hospitalized at the Infectious Diseases Clinic, two of them in more serious condition on a ventilator.
