The Macedonian Ruby Enters a New Phase of Protection and International Certification
The only naturally occurring, locally processed ruby in continental Europe — the government outlined the next steps.
The Ministry of Energy, Mining and Mineral Resources today announced further steps for the protection, certification and international promotion of the Macedonian ruby — the only natural ruby deposit in continental Europe that is processed locally.
The ruby, geologically known as corundum with a distinctive raspberry-pink colour caused by chromium in its crystal structure, is found exclusively near Prilep and in the Mariovo mountains. Energy Minister Sanja Bozhinovska announced back in June that an official ruling had arrived protecting the mineral as a Macedonian semi-precious stone.
Today's event was attended by Bozhinovska, members of the newly formed Commission for the Macedonian Ruby, and representatives of the Geological Survey and the State Office of Industrial Property. Concrete steps for establishing a protection and recognition system were presented — from determining and documenting origin, through certification, to setting clear criteria.
The process, which began in September 2025, aims to give this unique European mineral appropriate economic and cultural value, with an eye toward the international market.
